Helmets come in all different types for different uses and personal feel. Everyone wants a good looking helmet but protection is key.

Road helmets are going to be light. Again you’ll pay for what you get like most of the bike industry. Usually aerodynamic.

Cross country helmets will probably have s peak and might have some further head protection

Dirt jump / Skate helmets will have no peak and used for maximum vision while protecting hits from falls

Dirt jump and free ride lids , thanks for supporting the site! https://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tool_type=cl&merchant_id=e89e5112-91f9-4b3d-acde-90f8196e9075&website_id=42c53edd-d6c8-4450-a52f-4a88bee30fae&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.danscomp.com%2F

Enduro type lids will have a full cover over the back of your head and sometimes have a full face that is just lighter than a downhill helmet. Full face protection can be great as it will really protect your face as well as keeping the helmet in place in case of a crash.

Downhill helmets are like motocross helmets. They are going to be very protective and have all the things to really stop a impact.

With all helmets there are a few rules I use. Which some are advised by the manufacturer. First get a helmet with MIPS. It is marked by a yellow sticker and this means the helmet is mips certified and will be able to take a hit. Second piece of advice is after a fall, involving the head. Make sure the helmet did not take a hard hit as this will void the helmet. If the hit to the helmet is light you can keep using but something that is more than that you will need to replace your helmet.

Third ,ride the right helmet for application. Wear a full face when you’re riding extreme terrain. If it’s extreme to you then I can vouch that a full face can save your life. Try to get a more protective helmet for everything than a lighter one and hopefully you never need it but will be in luck if so.

Fourth is to wear eye protection. Riding glasses are great for open lid helmets and it saves you from not only dirt and trees but the helmet itself. Protecting your eyes are important and I don’t need to explain why. When wearing a full face wear goggles. They will also or your face and keep the helmet in place. They should be tight but not strangling. This can save your life and I can personally tell you that.

I also personally wear a trail helmet when riding my dirt jump bike because it’s comfortable with more padding protection and has a MIPS protection.

Overall a helmet can really save you. There is a reason we wear them. So pick one that is MIPS certified and the more protection the better.
